Most elegant and beautiful aircraft to ever take to the skies.
Go.
You’ve already gotten the Lockheed Constellation, you dirty bastard, so I’ll open with the Beech Model 17 Staggerwing.

And because you haven’t dropped everything that you are doing in work in life to respond to this right fucking now, I’m getting another shot in:
The Hughes H-1

There’s so many I can’t just choose one, but my opening shot will be the Hawker Sea Fury.

I don’t actually know how to describe that thing. Aside from the fact that it looks like the engine/prop is feathered, which won’t end well for the pilot or the plane, though the ground probably won’t care.
![]() 08/11/2016 at 14:48 |

Still a beautiful plane, though

I’ve never heard of anyone cutting the engine and feathering the prop to do a cropdust run, but I suppose it’s possible. On the other hand he may have conked out and started dumping the tanks to make for an easier landing. Hard to say, as I don’t believe the gear is retractable.

It really is. Some aircraft look great on the ground, but awkward in the air. Some look great in the air, but awkward on the ground. The F-16 looks great no matter what.

Definitely the A6M. Maybe not beautiful as some, but certainly elegant.

Do automatic pitch props tend to increase AOA when they encounter decreased resistance, as in a dive? Most likely they do, but I don’t know that for a fact.

Another de Havilland, this time the DH88. Note the similarity of the wing shape to the Dragon Rapide.

Always been a fan of the MiG-3
It’s like a P-51A, a Spitfire and a Fiat G-55 had a threesone and somehow the resultant child had only the best features each parent.

I can see where some would claim the Caravelle to be ugly, but I’ve always loved it. It just oozes the 1950s. It’s got the Comet’s nose, and I’m pretty sure Boeing stole the nose for the 787.

I’ve actually always thought it was a pretty good looking plane. Unsusual in its configuration, but good looking.
![]() 08/11/2016 at 15:15 |

I disagree. I think it makes it look like a futuristic space fighter. That said, the tip tanks on the Super Connie ruin the Connie for me.

I think we’re dead opposite on this one. I think the Connie’s tanks were better proportioned with the wings and body

Awkward on the ground, but boy were they pretty in the air:
![]() 08/11/2016 at 15:21 |

Last one then I’ve got to get some work done. The Napier-Heston Racer.
This was fun. Maybe next time we go for the ugliest plane. I think somebody already nailed that with the Airtruk, but the original Airtruck was even funkier, built from scavenged bits of a Harvard.
And....Kinja won’t let me post a picture.
Thanks for throwing down the gauntlet. This was a hoot.
![]() 08/11/2016 at 15:22 |

I can see that, but it screws up the proportions of the Lightning wing it was based on.
![]() 08/11/2016 at 15:23 |

Douglas moved the tailplanes up higher on the rudder, though. There weren’t many large passenger aircraft that had a rudder/tailplane configuration like that.
And speaking of high tailplanes, the Boeing 727:
Overall not the best in its class, but elegant nonetheless
![]() 08/11/2016 at 15:24 |

That’s a new one to me!
A little nonsense now and then is cherished by even the wisest of men. Enjoy the rest of your day, dude.

In this case, I believe that that is the replica
![]() 08/11/2016 at 15:28 |

Douglas more stole the concept of putting the engines aft than the overall design. I’m trying to remember where I read that Douglas and Sud worked together, or talked about building the Caravelle in the US, and Douglas had something to do with copying the concept. Honestly, I’ve spent so much time writing about so damned many planes that it’s no wonder things might be crossed up in my head.
Here it is, from the Wiki on the DC-9:
In 1960, Douglas signed a two-year contract with Sud Aviation for technical cooperation. Douglas would market and support the Sud Aviation Caravelle and produce a licensed version if airlines ordered large numbers. None were ordered and Douglas returned to its design studies after the cooperation deal expired.
For next week, I wrote a short paragraph about the first crash of a 727, which was CFIT, though it was Lake Michigan where they crashed.

It looks a bit awkward from a couple of angles, but I always love a good Bone (giggity).

Honestly, most planes look better unpainted, even the BUFF.
![]() 08/11/2016 at 16:26 |

You could also argue that, were it not for the Spitfire, Britain would have lost the Battle of Britain. They made a formidable team, with the Hurrys going after the bombers while the Spits took on the Messies.

Indeed. Which is why, as an avid aviation photographer, I’m so disappointed that AA ditched its silver planes in favor of that awful new livery. The old one photographed so much better. These are my pics below.
